Codiaeum variegatum (Croton, Joseph's coat)
A popular choice when localised colour is needed in beds and mixed displays. Some varieties make good specimen plants.
Cycas revoluta (False sago palm, Japanese sago palm)
A plant that is palm-like in appearance with a crown of glossy, green leaves made up of crowded, stiff, narrow leaflets. The trunk is stout, rough, dark and hairy.
Eriobotrya japonica (Japanese loquat, Japanese medlar, Nispero)
Fatsia japonica (Aralia japonica, Aralia sieboldii, False castor oil plant, Japanese aralia)
Jungly and exotic looking shrub that is fully hardy in much of Europe. A variegated form is also available.
Musa basjoo (Japanese banana)
Podocarpus macrophyllus (Buddhist pine, Chinese yew, Japanese yew)
A useful small specimen for containers or feature beds, especially in unheated and draughty areas.
