This
module of our on-line CPD training is concerned with
the reasons why plants are such an important building
accessory.
Most commercial buildings, from open-plan offices to
hotels and shopping centres contain at least a few plants,
and although people may walk past them with barely a
second glance they are quick to notice if the plants
are removed. So what is it about interior plants that
makes us treat them with such comfortable familiarity?
The most obvious answer is that they look attractive
– who can fail to be charmed by the graceful arch
of palm leaves or the exotic beauty of orchids –
and for most people this is reason enough. However,
recent research has shown that the value of plants goes
far beyond the purely aesthetic. Plants are actually
good for a building’s occupants in a number of
subtle ways and are an important element in providing
a pleasant, tranquil environment where people can work
or relax. They also have a number of practical applications,
such as wayfinding and signposting, establishing a corporate
image and enhancing the image of a building.
All these aspects are explored in this module. Links
are also provided to the main research organisations
involved. If you wish you can test your knowledge with
a short quiz and download a certificate that records
your participation in this training module.
This
module will take approximately 45 minutes to complete.
