Plant Requirements - Temperature

Chamaerops humilisThe temperature inside most occupied buildings usually falls between 16 oC and 25 oC; comfortable enough for most people.  If you want plants in your building, you need to find those that can survive well at the same temperatures.  Fortunately, there are hundreds of species from the tropics and sub-tropics that are ideally suited to such year-round warmth.  Use the plant selector in the specifiers' guide to find some plants that are suited to a temperature of 20 oC  (Hint: use the "info" buttons to see what we mean by the different temperature categories.)

Some parts of your building may be much cooler or subject to sudden draughts.  This shouldn't put you off using plants as there are many species from temperate and mediterranean areas that will be ideal.  Even if you want a lush tropical look, there are palms and bamboos that can survive in temperatures approaching freezing as well as doing quite nicely in much warmer situations.  A good example is the European Fan Palm, Chamaerops humilis, which is hardy enough to survive out of doors all year round at quite high latitudes.

What about the hot spots?  Plant rooms and computer suites can get very warm.  There are many plants that will thrive in those locations, but you must ensure that they can cope with the low humidity that often occurs in those situations.  Look for desert plants, succulents and other species adapted for hot dry conditions.  Plants with a spiky habit are often adapted for hot, dry conditions as well as those with a waxy bloom on their leaves.
