Various office block atriums in the USA

Many large office buildings feature an atrium.  These spaces are usually well lit and are ideal locations for plant displays.  Offices that do not have an external window often only have a view of the atrium, so it makes good sense to provide an attractive view.

Views of vegetation are now regarded as an important way to reduce workplace stress and increase productivity.  Planted atriums may be the only view that some building occupants get.

Atriums are often the focal point of a building and they are frequently the place where visitors to the building arrive and get their first impressions of the place.  It should be a good one.

Bradford Exchange

Bradford Exchange, Niles, Illinois

This well-lit atrium in a modern building.  The specimen palm trees are complimented by beds of mixed tropical foliage plants.

Parkway North

Parkway North: Baxter Pharmaceuticals,

Deerfield, Illinois

This large glass-fronted atrium makes good use of pockets of coloured plants.

Fuji

Fuji America Headquarters building,

Vernon Hills, Illinois

This narrow atrium makes use of a long pool to reflect the curved roof of the building.  The planting style and wooden bridge reflect the Japanese origins of the company.

Esplanade

Esplanade at Locust Pointe, Downers Grove, Illinois

Informal planting and the use of replica bamboo give this atrium an outdoors feel.

John Deere

John Deere headquarters, Moline, Illinois

This large atrium gives a view of greenery to the office workers over-looking the space.

Sears

Sears World HQ building, Hoffman Estates, Illinois

The Atrium at the Sears HQ is very formal and, despite the large size of the trees, quite understated.

Intermedia

Intermedia Corporation corporate headquarters,

Tampa, Florida

Attractive Adonidia palms (Veitchia merrilli) provide a nice backdrop to the large sculpture.
