Zoos and aviaries

Zoos and aviaries need plants for many reasons.  The most important is to provide a natural looking habitat for the animals.

These pictures all come from the USA and they show how plants can be used to give a dramatic backdrop to the exhibits and give the animals a feeling for home.

Tulsa zoo, Oklahoma

Tulsa Zoo, Oklahoma

This display is part of the South American

Rain Forest exhibit

Tulsa zoo crocodile enclosure

Tulsa Zoo crocodile enclosure.

This exhibit uses live plants in the foreground and a painted backdrop 'trompe l'oeil' effect.  Can you spot where real life finishes and the painting begins?

Denver zoo

Denver Zoo, Colorado has one of the largest planted landscapes in the industry.  This is the enclosure for the clouded leopards, but they were a bit camera shy.

Milwaukee zoo aviary

Milwaukee County Zoo aviary, Wisconsin.

The birds feel at home in amongst the trees

and perching on the rocks.

North Carolina zoo aviary

Again, we see plants used to enhance the

environment of the birds and make the

space more interesting for visitors too.
